Step 1: Front sprocket first, while the old chain holds
Crack the front sprocket nut loose while the old chain is still on and the rear brake can hold everything — it's often very tight, and doing this first saves fighting a freewheeling shaft later. Step 2: Break the old chain
Use the chain breaker to press out a pin and the old chain drops free. No grinder needed, though grinding the pin head first eases cheap tools' work.
Step 3: Swap sprockets
Front sprocket off and on with its new nut or lock washer, torqued to spec. Rear wheel out, sprocket off the carrier, new one on, torqued in a cross pattern. Inspect the carrier's cush drive rubbers while it's apart — worn cush rubbers add the driveline lash people blame on chains.
Step 4: Size and fit the new chain
New chains come long. Same gearing: match the old chain's link count. Changed gearing: wrap the new chain around both sprockets with the axle mid-adjustment-range and mark the length (gearing math here). Cut with the breaker, feed it over the sprockets, and join.
Step 5: The master link — do this right
This is the safety-critical step. Rivet type: press the plate to the maker's width spec and flare the pins with the tool, measuring the flare. Clip type: closed end facing the direction of travel, clip fully seated. A binding master link (over-pressed plate) is an instant tight spot — the joined link must flex exactly like its neighbors.
Step 6: Adjust, torque, break in
Set slack to spec at the tightest point, align the wheel, torque the axle (full procedure). Expect one more adjustment within a few hundred miles as the chain seats (break-in explained) — and start the new chain on the habit that decides its lifespan: clean fast with the CC360, lube the inside run, and this job won't come around again for a long time.
