Sprocket swaps are the cheapest transformation in motorcycling — twenty dollars of steel can make a sluggish bike feel angry or a buzzy one relax on the highway. Here's how the numbers actually work.

The ratio is everything

Final drive ratio = rear teeth ÷ front teeth. A 15-tooth front with a 45-tooth rear gives 3.00. Raise that number (smaller front or bigger rear) and you get shorter gearing: harder acceleration, lower top speed, higher rpm at cruise. Lower it and you get the opposite. Everything else is detail.

Front vs rear: the leverage difference

One tooth on the front sprocket changes the ratio about as much as three on the rear — that's why "-1 front" is the classic cheap hooligan mod. But small front sprockets bend the chain around a tighter radius, adding wear and noise. Rear changes are gentler per tooth and let you fine-tune. The common recipes: -1 front for cheap acceleration, +2 rear for the same effect with less chain stress, +1 front or -2 rear to calm a screaming highway rpm.

What -1/+2 actually feels like

On a typical middleweight it's the difference between shifting at every stoplight and pulling wheelies-adjacent drive out of corners. The costs: roughly proportional top-speed loss, a few hundred extra rpm at 70mph, and a speedometer that now reads optimistic (speed is calculated from gearing on most bikes — a speedo healer fixes it).

Chain length: the catch

Adding rear teeth or removing front teeth consumes chain. A +2 rear often still fits within adjuster range on the existing chain; bigger jumps need links added or a new chain. Picking gearing for your riding

Tight trails and supermoto: shorter (see the supermoto setup). Commuting with highway stretches: stock or slightly taller. Loaded ADV touring: stock, or one tooth taller if the engine has torque to spare — and note taller gearing slightly eases chain wear at cruise. Whatever you run, gearing changes multiply the forces the chain sees during acceleration, which makes the boring stuff — correct slack and a clean, lubed chain (the CC360 keeps that to a minute) — matter a little more, not less.
