The geometry that demands slack
The chain's tightest condition isn't at rest — it's when the swingarm pivot, countershaft, and rear axle form a straight line, which happens deep in the suspension stroke. Long-travel dirt bike suspension swings through a big arc, so the difference between resting slack and full-compression tension is huge. Rotate the wheel and check several chain positions — slack must be set at the tightest spot, and a big difference between spots means a worn chain, not an adjustment problem.
Too tight: the expensive direction

Too loose: the derailment direction
