What it is
On most chain-driven bikes, the rear sprocket doesn't bolt rigidly to the wheel — it bolts to a carrier that keys into the hub through a set of rubber blocks. Those blocks are the cush drive. Every throttle opening, downshift, and drive-line jolt compresses them slightly, rounding off the impact before it reaches the chain, sprockets, gearbox, and your wrists.
The symptoms — and why they masquerade as chain problems
As the rubbers compress, harden, and wear, rotational free play grows between carrier and hub, and drive-line lash gets loud: a clunk when you crack or close the throttle, snatchy on-off transitions, a knock from the rear under shifting. Every one of those is also on the chain noise list — which is why riders chase them with adjustments (slack checks are still step one) and chain replacements that don't fix the clunk. Worn cush rubbers also transmit unbuffered shocks to the chain, quietly accelerating the very chain wear they imitate.
The two-minute check
Bike on a stand, or wheel off: hold the rear wheel still and try to rotate the sprocket (or grab the sprocket carrier) back and forth. A healthy cush drive allows barely perceptible movement; distinct rotational play — a visible few millimeters at the sprocket teeth, a clack you can feel — means the rubbers are done. With the wheel out, pull the carrier and inspect: healthy rubbers fill their pockets snugly; worn ones are compressed, cracked, or rattle loose.
Replacement: cheap and easy
Cush rubber sets are inexpensive and installation is a puzzle-piece job — pry the old blocks out, press the new ones in (a little soapy water helps), reassemble. The natural moment is any rear-wheel-out job: tire changes, and especially chain and sprocket replacement, where fresh rubbers protect the new kit from day one. A drivetrain with a healthy cush drive, clean chain (the one-minute habit), and correct slack is a quiet drivetrain — and every clunk it doesn't make is wear that isn't happening.
