Chain lore passes from garage to garage, and some of it stopped being true decades ago — if it ever was. Here are the persistent myths, each checked against how chains actually work.
Myth: "Sealed chains are maintenance-free"
The seals protect the grease inside the pins — nothing else. Rollers still run on external lube, seals still need lube to stay supple, and grit still grinds everything it touches. Sealed chains lowered the maintenance stakes; they didn't remove them (how they actually work).
Myth: "A tight chain is a safe chain"
Backwards. The chain's tightest moment is deep in suspension travel; a chain tight at rest goes rigid at compression, hammering the countershaft bearing and stretching itself. Loose-within-spec beats tight every time (the physics).
Myth: "WD-40 is fine as chain lube"
It's a water displacer and light solvent that flings off within miles. Cleaner and rust-chaser: legitimate. Lube: no (the full verdict).
Myth: "New chains stretch because they're cheap"
All new chains seat during the first few hundred miles — normal, one adjustment, done (break-in explained). Continuous loosening after that has real causes worth finding.
Myth: "Just replace the chain, sprockets look fine"
Sprockets re-machined by a worn chain look fine and murder new chains anyway. The tooth shapes tell the truth (read them); kits replace together.
Myth: "Chain cleaning is a 30-minute job"

Myth: "Expensive chains don't need care"
Premium metallurgy extends the wear curve; grit and dryness still bend it down. Maintained-cheap beats neglected-premium in every longevity dataset riders have assembled (the lifespan numbers).
Myth: "A little rust means the chain is done" / "rust doesn't matter"
Both wrong, usefully: surface bloom wipes off harmlessly; rust in the rollers or stiff links is structural. The ten-minute triage is in riding with rust.
The pattern
Every myth either oversells maintenance (to justify skipping it) or oversells hardware (to justify buying instead of maintaining). The truth is cheaper than both: minutes of care on schedule, and the chain simply works.
